The groups are from the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne and are made up of people who like organic gardening and have an interest in homesteading, sustainability and Permaculture. Permaculture can be used from the balcony to the farm and from the country to the city and it covers a whole host of subjects and fields of study but this group is focused on using Permaculture in their own backyards or on local issues, like those with which we live daily. The focus of the groups is to grow organic backyard food using sustainable gardening techniques. The meetings will be monthly and it is planned they will be motivating, informative, applicable to your area and as a consequence interesting. It is envisaged that many sustainable pursuits will be discussed at meetings for example; preserving the harvest, bricklaying, tool maintenance, welding, spinning, needlework plus Biodynamics, Aquaponics and keeping backyard animals. Information will be circulated about the health benifits of organic food and on using herbs on a day to day process. There will be no committees as people would rather be out in their own backyards than attending committee meetings or tied up in red tape. Information will be shared on what to grow and how to grow it and newbies to gardening will be mentored. if they want it. People will be encouraged to help, share and swap - seeds, seedlings, cuttings, ideas, expiriences and to have fun and learn from each other. If someone needs a hand, blitz style, it maybe lent but only if it is of interest or educational to the group as these groups are not service clubs like Rotary or Lions. The philosophy is to teach a man to fish not fish for him, hence the mentoring and the flow of information, we all learn at our own pace. As for cost, some organisations charge a yearly fee, all this will cost is a gold coin donation per meeting plus good will and fellowship and for the groups to be inclusive and accessible to all who are interested in producing their own food regardless of age, financial means, gender or ethnicity we know the price is right. :)
